In a city filled with historic curiosities, the Imperial Riding School acts as tribute to Vienna’s rich history, colourful quirks and harmonious juxtapositions. Here, Emperor Franz Joseph I established his military equestrian school in the 19th century. His regal impact can still be felt in the vaulted ceilings and striking archways throughout the surviving majestic front building.
Over the years, this place constantly evolved to serve the city, at one point becoming Vienna’s largest cinema, and later a WWII post office bus stop. Today, with a contemporary addition adjoining the grand facade, it is a place for locals and visitors alike to unwind, recharge and connect with the many characters of Vienna, past and present.
Throughout your stay, you’ll discover nods to our varied heritage, from the stable-inspired floors to the plethora of apple delights, plucked from the orchard that is in the same spot as the apple trees that Emperor Franz Joseph I famously loved. Inside, taste reimagined Austrian classics at Elstar restaurant, or enjoy the tranquillity of one of the city’s largest private gardens, which is also home to The Old Lady, one of Vienna’s oldest surviving trees.
Located in the Landstraße district, a haven for artists and academics alike, the Imperial Riding School is nestled amongst historic fascinations that echo the city’s mix of regal and bohemian influences. These are just a few of our favourite spots.
