As early as 1850, a Military Riding Instructors’ Institute was founded here. The preserved pillars still bear the traces of times gone by. Behind the historic façade lies one of Vienna’s largest private gardens, once the orchard of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The Elstar apple variety, said to be his favourite and the namesake of the restaurant, still blossoms here today, forming a culinary bridge between past and present.

Elstar The Garden & Orchard

Tucked behind our majestic facade we have the city’s largest private garden, framed by a small orchard—an homage to Emperor Franz Joseph I’s beloved apple trees that once stood here. A tranquil enclave in the heart of Vienna, here you can enjoy the full Elstar menu, which encompasses a mix of small and large plates of Austrian classics. With its own bar and extensive outdoor space, the garden transforms throughout the year, hosting barbecues and picnics in summer, and festive markets ahead of Christmas.

The Farrier Bar

A sophisticated bar without any of the fussiness, The Farrier evolves from coffee spot by day to sleek cocktail spot at night. Named after the craftsmen responsible for dressing the Imperial Riding School horses, today’s Farrier applies that same attention to detail to creating impeccable drinks that encourage you to linger a little longer. Here, you can gather with friends for a midday reprieve from work or play, or gather in the evening for one of our locally sourced natural wines or creative takes on classic cocktails.
